Basilica of Saint Mary in Via Lata
Discovering 2000 years of history and christianity in the eternal city
The crypt of this baroque church is a hidden gem: it preserves a Roman dwelling dating back to the first century, with a story that saw the presence of the pillars of our faith. According to tradition, Saint Luke the Evangelist took up residence here upon his arrival in Rome, then welcoming Saint Peter upon his own arrival. And even Saint Paul dwelt here during the time of his house arrest in Rome, writing his letters to the Colossians, to Philemon, to the Ephesians and to the Philippians.
Feel the spirituality of the monks who lived here from the 7th to the 11th century, offering assistance to pilgrims and to the needy. Relive the stories of the apostles and the evangelists. Pray in front of the marian icon in the church, the "Madonna Advocata", attributed to Saint Luke the evangelist.
